Recorder ensembles

Do you have one in your locality? Have you been to one of their performances? Better yet, are you actually in one, and if so, what size(s) of recorder do you play?

The Eugene Recorder Ensemble will be performing at the Junction City Scandinavian Festival tomorrow. I'll have to make sure my plastic tenor (too poor for wood at this time) is properly Duponoled beforehand.

1. I was in one at age 10

My church choir director was an early music fan--back when that was really unusual, ca. 1960.

He put his harpsichord in the church balcony, and brought in recorders of all different sizes. We all learned on the soprano, which is where I stayed, and then some of the older kids played the alto and tenor.

We'd play four-part arrangements of hymns during Communion.

2. There is one at the SF Renaissance Faire every year

I can't remember their name, but the Ren Faire starts up again on Labor day weekend, so I'll make a point of finding out. The acoustics (of outdoors) are of course terrible and the ambient noise is not conducive to serious listening, even so they are VERY good. Every year I ask if they would like to be on a local (Cable-access) TV show I do sound for. One day I hope they'll say yes.

3. This fall I plan to upgrade my tenor (and possibly alto) to wood

Wooden basses or great basses are out of the question, but this would be a good next step for me.
