Water Falling Over Things 2009: Part II (Waterfall in the City)

One of the benefits of spending Inauguration Day morning at the Air America party in Pioneer Square is coming across new parts of Seattle that I would never encounter while driving past the area. In my case, I was lucky enough to discover the as-yet-unknown-by-me Waterfall Garden Park:



This is a beautiful little walled, sunken garden built on the site of the long-gone saloon -- yes, I said saloon -- where, in 1907, American Messenger Service (later to be renamed United Parcel Service) was founded. The foundation started by U.P.S. built this as a tribute in 1977, but it somehow remained a secret to me before 1/20/09.



Sure, it's artificial, and will never compete with Multinomah, Snoqualmie, or Punchbowl Falls in any case, but it was sure great to find such a nice WFOT subject right in the middle of Seattle during photography's "off-season" around here.

especially really good ones like these. And that terrific contrasting yellow. What is that?

2. I don't know...

It was an unusual tree -- as you can tell, it still had dead leaves on it, but seemed to be in flower (in the middle of January in Seattle???). There was nothing that indicated what kind of tree it was, and nobody around to ask.

6. It is a witch hazel, or a winter hazel.

They are beautiful, how they bloom in the middle of winter, some are very fragrant, too.

One of my favorite trees. I like any that bloom on naked branches.

4. Forsythia maybe?

Forsythia flowers in early spring, I think. It seems a bit early (and cold), but that's usually the first thing to flower around here. Anyway, that's my best guess.

11. It's at the intersection of 2nd Ave South and South Washington Street...
