It is a black and white actually shot on film. I hope I understand the idea of negative space correctly because I don't see it in this photo.

I believe that they are some kind of potato - I didn't notice what the name was I just thought that they looked so "alien" :-)

sweet potatoes or yams that haven't had their roots removed. That would be my guess.
