<<<<< Comment thread for Submissions to April contest>>>>> Theme "Negative Spaces"
Edited on Sun Apr-17-11 10:08 PM by Mira
I posted the submission thread a little early because I won't have time to do it in the morning. I hope it won't inconvenience anyone, except give us a little extra time to get our 30 entries together.

1. FIRST comment, and then I'll (maybe) shut it for a while, because
constant commentary is not my job.

Celebration,
you were very quiet, and now you post this out the gate which explains why you were so quiet. You were holding this masterpiece in abeyance, and I can't blame you. It is wonderful. I'm so happy for you, and proud for such a great start!!!

2. I've been babysitting for my grandson
Edited on Sun Apr-17-11 10:27 PM by Celebration
And before that had houseguests. I just haven't had time for photography, and I know I have been quiet. I can start blabbering away again soon. I had to go to my archives. I went to Nashville one day and took a bunch of photos but they were in noon sunlight and that was certainly a challenge. I have some guitar shaped signs but nothing really worth posting and not negative spaces. Thanks for the compliment on my photo. I've seen some wonderful potential entries posted here and have really enjoyed seeing them and voting in polls.

3. That explains your quiet. I just lean back, look at the luminescence in your photo
and make happy noises. You gave us a rocking start.
Now that this show is on the road I will be tending to a few things on the home front myself until the tricky (preliminary) parts begin.

Warblers there by now. I saw my first Prothonotary Warbler there.

Not my picture:

6. I had to look it up!
I should have gone there when I was in Nashville! I have a bunch of silly downtown Nashville photos instead. Well I did like the wooden statues of Buffalo Bill Cody and Sitting Bull. I guess I am all ready for a cowboy theme...

13. Nice pic. Nashville's second avenue used to be great, but
now it has gone Disney on us. The last time I was there It was too "busy." It used to be a more laid back fun. Now you can't stagger without bumping into someone.

http://www.radnorlake.org/welcome.html

They have bald eagles, Wood Ducks, and you can get a good close up look at Alligator Snappers.
In this map you see a road. On the side of the road away from the lake are some ponds. In those ponds are some huge snappers. Some look like big green lumps.

27. well when I was there on the riverfront
not much was going on......just a few down and out musicians loitering around.

A friend of mine that lives in Florida loves Radnor Lake.......she grew up in Nashville. I might mention to her that I could meet her there and hike sometime. Still a bit of a drive for me unless I have to be there anyway. Thanks for the idea :hi:

Johnny Noshoes - Adore it!

WJMS - I really like the bottles.

Great photos everyone!!

Great hosting, Mira!!! (as always!)

Still getting things ready. My chinnies will have a new home on Wednesday. A woman we know in K-town is giving them a home.

Selling my car and have a buyer. Ever so much more to do to move back across the pond than it is to move in-country.

So far, so good. Hopefully everything will go as smooth as possible.

16. Yes of course. Simply click on the photo that you posted
post the new one underneath in a new post, and then delete the first one from your host site, like photobucket. It will then disappear in the first thread (after a while - maybe 15 min or so)
Or you can leave it, and I will use the new photo as your entry.

19. Blue in Ak, I had to laff at The Bering Sea Ice Golf Classic pic.
Centuries ago, I had a room mate in college who had lived way up in Northern Alaska and showed me a picture of a small evergreen tree...real small tree...with a teeny white picket fence around it and a sign: Katazubu National forest.

Now, I know I am not spelling that right.

but for some reason the 3 trees in the pic combined with the Alaskan version of golf just cracked me up,
as we are so used to seeing the Southern version of golf around here, shorts and shades and etc.

:hi:

35. In Nome, everyone saves their Christmas trees,
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 02:37 AM by Blue_In_AK
and then during the Iditarod in March, they set them up out on the ice and call it the "Nome National Forest." They also set up life-size painted plywood figures of polar bears and other northern critters out there, but I don't remnember seeing those this year. My eyesight's not what it used to be, though, so who koows?

Anyway, the "holes," which are cups buried in the snow, are placed on a course through the trees and signs, and a hilarious time is had by all -- especially this year in the snow. (They have to use orange balls, for obvious reasons.)

The place you mentioned is Kotzebue which is the next major village north of Nome on the other side of the Seward Peninsula. John Baker, who won the Idtiarod this year, is a Native Alaskan (Inupiat) from Kotzebue. All the locals out there in Western Alaska, white and Native, were so excited to have one of their own win the race. Uaually the winners live somewhere along the road system or come up from other states or countries. It was nice to have a change.

from scrap metal they collected. They did that because there used to be a joke that on Shemya there was a woman behind every tree.

40. Alas, my nocturnal lifestyle is once again my undoing
By the time I got around to checking in this afternoon and posting "Mar Pacifico", the entry list was already filled plus some. No hard feelings of course, I'll be ready next month if I can still remember how to set an alarm. LOL

I find some comfort that many posted images are far superior to my own entry, and this contest will likely be the most competitive of the year thus far. Who knew "negative space" would generate such interest when many months the forum struggles to find 30 entries on time? Obviously, everyone including me had a lot of fun with this one.

Good luck to all.

Unless I'm counting wrong, you snagged the last spot. The "extra" entries were resizes, replacements, and one self-delete. This one filled up really quickly so any longer and you might really have missed it.
