Edited on Sun May-01-11 03:54 PM by Brickbat
Here in northern Minnesota, I still have ice down on the creek. I have a photo of an icy waterfall but it wasn't the best of my bunch. I would have liked it to be, though!

6. I hear ya.
Our snow is finally all gone as of this past week, but the perennials are just starting to pop up (microscopically). The Spring contest is always a tough one for me. On the first day of spring we were in Nome in a blizzard. :)

I doubt I'll have anything before the 30 entries are posted.

7. The lupine is just starting to peek here, and my daffodils are just starting to put up flower buds.
We usually don't have lilacs until June here. Here's the waterfall:

10. That's when we get our lilacs, too.
I haven't checked my lupine yet. The wildflower garden is still covered with leaves. Your climate must be very similar to ours.

26. Welcome to the group,
I guess if you really wanted to make up for posting in the wrong place you could share another photo. Some of us (me) tend to want to see more and more photos and are a tad greedy that way.(All of the previous is said with a big smile filled welcoming tone and a bit of begging.)
Our split submission/commenting threads were started to make it easier to keep count of entries. A couple extra post won't hurt. It was when trying to keep track of 30 photos with lots of comments on each one got hard to keep up with. Think about 30 photos with comments under each one and comments on the comments and on it went.

Now other newer arrivals that weren't in the group ages ago know why the thread got split.:) There was a time when there were only 10 entries total in the contest. It filled in minutes.

29. alfredo...
could you tell me what you took your picture with??

I have had my camera for a year now and still only dream of taking a picture like that. My partner just keeps telling me to read my book and study and all I want to do is snap pictures...

the columbine is just so sharp and the color is great...

31. Mr. alfredo is using a Canon Powershot G10
You are using a Canon 50D with a 28-135 IS lens. Your 50D is better than any digital camera that I own.

Mr. alfredo has an excellent ability to post-process his photos.

It was this and having the 'eye' to make the best use of light that contributed to his wonderful flower photo.

You can learn some things from books but to really learn you need to just be patient. Learn from your mistakes. Your 'Spring' photo is very good. You did use 'auto' settings on everything so understanding what all those other buttons do would be a good start.

I was in the camera store recently picking up a few things and there was this woman who just paid over $3,000 for a Nikon DSLR setup so she could take pictures of her kids sport events at school. She didn't have a clue how to use the camera and was willing to pay $150 plus travel expenses so someone from the camera store could meet her at a sport event and setup her camera. I wanted to tell her to save the $3,000 and just hire a pro to take photos of her kids.

Be patient. Take slower steps. Learn from your mistakes. Play around with your camera. Experiment. Learn what all those buttons and dials do. Eventually you'll need to learn post processing but you need to understand the camera first. It's a long process and the learning curve is infinite.
:hi:

32. Thank you. I used a Canon G10. One reason I got that
camera was because it is pretty good with closeups.

I did post processing in GiMP. Mostly I use Auto White Balance, Wavelet Sharpening, Curves, and some film emulators like VelviaX and ProviaX to pump up the saturation. The better the raw (the out of camera) image, the less I have to use.

It is not the camera, it is the seeing. Playing is just as important as reading the book. Learn as you go. Someone mentions the ND filter, you look it up in the book or on line. EV comes in handy. You learn it when you need it.

Famed clown Emmett Kelly said his secret was watching children. The camera screen can be a portal into that world of child like wonder, you just have to see it.

Janus

I used a heavy crop on this image, and a Lomo filter was used to isolate and emphasize the drama. Technical details are a distant second to the emotional impact. The viewer should feel something, even if it is revulsion.

34. Thanks. It is hard to find a fresh approach to a subject.
This forum allows us to inspire each other.

I've always liked your work, and when I see you post images I take a look.

My weak area is in color. I have difficulty finding the line between brilliant and garish. I've tended to a heavy hand when it comes to contrast. Black and white has helped in that regard, and has bled over to my recent color images.

I'd like to hear more about how others approach their photography.

27. That song...
My son and his friend used it for an audition for a school play over 15 years ago, complete with choreography. It went so well that they used it again the next year. Why stop there? They used it again for the 3rd year.

Then they finally graduated and I didn't have to hear them rehersing it.

36. I just counted, and there are 4 spots left (i only counted once...) - you conceivably
could private message the host and ask for a spot after hours.
He has in mind to run the 3 threads starting day after tomorrow. If you like, this could work.

The submission thread has been quietly sitting there, no fanfare and that's probably how it happened.
