Denis Smith's Balls of Light
Unfortunately with the new job (which I fortunately have) I don't get to post much but thought I would "drive by" this. Maybe it's been done before?

He makes them by spinning lights on a rope while gradually rotating and keeping the shutter open.

There is a 15 minute documentary about him and his work on the web.

1. A job? Wow, that's pretty cool. Affording food and shelter is
a good thing.

Love the Denis Smith site. Thank you for "driving by" and leaving a nice present for us.

4. I really like the images, however
Edited on Sat May-21-11 08:29 AM by Stevenmarc
I almost wish I didn't watch the video, it kind of left me conflicted. The art world is full of hucksters and don't get me wrong I love a good huckster, Warhol and Koons come to mind, but the whole salvation through a camera lens tale is a tad over the top, maybe I just have a problem with someone that touts the misery of his life in marketing as a marketing tool.

Another tiny point in the movie that got me a bit miffed was the the hazmat attire, anyone that has done any light painting knows that that would be the last thing you would wear for light painting since it would reflect light, let's put it this way, ninjas make better light painters than the Orkin man.

That said, I think he's a good artist, I like how he places the orbs in the environment but I also would like to see how he evolves from such a strong series of images.

5. I don't think I watched the same video
I have been known to be a bit cynical from time to time but I don't see a "pity sell" going on here. The word huckster didn't come to mind at all. Actually; I feel a spiritual kinship with this dude. I would like to meet him.

His Spheres came about through a transformation in his approach to photography. He became bored with doing the same photography that a brazillion other people are doing. As a hobbie photography was a part of his walkabout's. I don't see a "pity sell". Yes, he's selling his work but I don't see his marketing style as "look how horrible my life has been".

I know a (very good) photographer that was inspired by visions of ghosts that she claims to have seen. Her work really reflects that. People don't buy her photos because she 'saw ghosts', they buy them because her work is very good.

Where did you see a hazmat suit? He wears what I wear. Hooded sweatshirt, pants, shoes, socks, boxer shorts, and a half-smile. :P Well, to be honest, I'm not sure about the boxer shorts. In the Zero Lux video there is no reflection.

Not going to say you're wrong. I just happen to disagree with your observations. I see something completely different.

:hi:
