| Should I get a new camera or a new lens? |
|
I have a Nikon D80. I've been pretty happy with it but it does have some limitations especially in low light situations. I have an 18-105 lens which has worked out pretty well. I'm thinking of either getting the D7000 or the 18-150 lens, which would give me more focal range and I think is a bit faster. What do you think? I may just not do a thing for a while.

The D80 is pretty limited. You will be amazed at the difference.

as good as its glass. I would say if you are wanting to expand what the camera can do and are going to go into doing more things yourself instead of using the auto functions, upgrade the camera. If you are going to stick to auto functions then upgrade your lens. The most important thing is to figure how you are going to use the camera and get what best fits you. In the best world you could upgrade both the camera and lens.:)

| 3. Figure out what you want to take pictures of, |
|
what conditions they happen under, and then figure out what parts of your current system are holding you back.
The 18-X mm lenses are all slow, variable-aperture lenses; it does not matter what the X number is. If you don't want to spend the $$$ on f/2.8 zooms, fast primes are relatively cheap.
While the D7000 is a great camera and your D80 is now two generations old, if you have not exceeded its capabilities yet then getting a lens upgrade will work for both your D80 and whatever body you eventually get later.

| 4. Ended up getting both! |

Bought the camera at Ritz Camera ;locally. The had a deal on an excellent 18-105 lens at a decent discount when you bought the camera. My old lens was an 18-55 and was okay. But this supposedly a much higher grade of lens. We'll see. It does seem much more substantial.

(being a Canon girl), but I think you'll be happy with both upgrades. I would have probably suggested better lenses, if you had to choose one or the other, but, lucky for you, you didn't have to make that choice. Have fun with your new gear. :)
