| 3. The ooc b&w is pretty good. I haven't explored that function on my Oly. |
|
Maybe it is time. I remember my Canon G10 had very good b&w.

| 4. They all look flat. Maybe it's my monitor but the highlights are muddy |
|
and the blacks aren't black. There isn't the 'punch' that B&W needs. Pictures are interesting tho.

| 5. They remind me of the OOC B&W of my Canon. How can he |
|
bring out the blacks, but not wash out the highlights?

| 6. That would be a post processing issue. Lots of ways to |
|
adjust highlight/shadow densities. I don't know about in-camera controls, even with the Oly. I shoot "straight" images, i.e. normal color, low ISO and maybe 1/3 stop under (a holdover from the Kodachrome days) then record in jpeg+raw. Then I fine tune in Paintshop. That's also where I apply B&W film and filter effects.
In PS I can manipulate contrast curve, histogram or change highlight/mid-tone/shadow strength in either color or B&W. I'd assume that every imaging software would have some brightness/contrast control.

| 7. I shoot Raw and convert to JPG, I then check white balance, |
|
curves, and levels. I use Two GIMP plugins: Filtered BW (you can apply different colored filters) and Black and White Film ( Emulates various brands From Agfa, Fuji, Ilford, Kodak.) I like the Ilford PanF

| 8. It looks to me like you are really working it and studying and learning. |

I don't so much like the birds, but the tubes are fabulous and interesting and the leaves are the best. I also like the one above the leaves, but would crop a little off the top and the left side. The trash can lacking depth dimension makes it endearing and makes me look more than twice. More!
