The story behind it is almost as impressive as the photo.

I was trying to get a shot of a plane silhouetted by the setting sun with the tower off to the side. I had a relatively short window of opportunity. Some of the planes were either taking off and climbing too fast and going above the sun, or they were climbing too slow and staying beneath it. Another problem I had was the timing was very tricky. There was a building blocking the view of the plane, so I had no time to anticipate exactly when to take the shot. I decided to make lemonade and get a shot of the tower immediately after the sun disappeared because I knew the colors would go crazy brilliant. I was taking frame after frame just trying to get the perfect shot when a plane appeared right at the perfect spot as I released the shutter. Sometimes you just get lucky.
