| how much of your time is art making? |
|
what percentage of your week is art making? i am a full time mom, but now that my kids are older, i have more time to make art. i have a studio, and i try to get there are least once a week. i don't usually actually accomplish that, tho. twice a month is more like it. but it is a great inspiration to me that i will be wasting so much money if i don't get there. i do clay and some painting there.
i do consider my buttons to be part of my art, tho, and i spend a lot time on that. i consider my time at du to be part of that process. but apart from that, i spend about 20-30 hours a week on the design, production, and promotion of the buttons. it's not much money, but it sure is a lot of artistic satisfaction. i had hopes of returning to my own self-indulgent navel gazing during the kerry administration, but i guess i am making buttons for 4 moron years. so i have been working on making more of it, getting more retailers, and attending more events. i miss my navel.
so how about you? do you work every day? squeeze it in on the weekend? or like i was when the kids were little- lock yourself in a room for a day or 2, every few months, when you are ready to explode?

| 1. I finally got serious just this year... |
|
...and put together at least two pieces in less than two months time, and these were ideas that had been rattling around in my head for over a year. Between the breakdown and motherhood the past 8 years have been a real blank space. And it hurt to go through my sketch/idea book at times during my hiatus, knowing I couldn't work!
Since the move last fall, I've gotten out all my papers, inks, junk, etc and now have two others in the "put-together" stage - I'm playing catch-up...
Ideally? I could work for hours, days at a time but it usually works out to a couple of hours a day, every few days or so.

When I'm working hard, trying to finish a commission or just getting started on one, I do it eight hours a day, like the job that it is. I find that if I don't approach my art in this way, I become lazy and lose track of where I was going with a cycle of work or ideas.

| 3. when i am painting i do naps for a few hours |
|
time flys away and the hard part is resting your body.20 hours a stretch is normal and working on 3 or 4 things at once works for me.The medium is different so the process keeps moving.Drawing is the hard part ,breaks are needed because my eyes hurt and arm gets numb.
