I just watched Grave of the Fireflies this weekend

Great movie. Different from most animated movies. Very dark in subject but at the same time very beautiful. The subjects that it deals with, war, sickness, starvation, death, are just not things you'd expect to see in an animated movie.

It was full of contrasts. Horrific images of the devastation of war were juxtaposed against stunningly beautiful landscapes. The love the characters shared for each other were contrasted against the pain of starvation and illness. Then there is the contrast of the living and the dead.

I really liked it.
