Its a ref back to when the mother rented the boat for 20 minutes. A looooonnnnnggggggg time ago. Or were you refering to a different scene?

Right before the credits roll, and the scene you describe.
It shows what appears to be an older version of Champion, sitting in a well appointed room, watching what appears to be the movie on a color TV. He turns off stage and says, "Grandma, I think it's over," or words to that effect.
