Question regarding area rug placement?

I recently purchased a sofa with an attached chaise for my apartment. I want to place an area rug to absorb noise, "group" the area, and give me a soft surface to exercise on.

The sofa is about 8' wide and the chaise is about 6' long.

I think a 5x8' rug would look awkward, but a 4x7' still requires me to put part of the chaise on the rug. I found a great rug that comes in both sizes but I have no idea which would look better (one size has to be ordered).

My floor is wood composite; the living room, dining area, and kitchen all run together. I'm NOT good at this stuff, so all help is appreciated.

1. For what it's worth...every decorating show I've seen has said

to anchor the rug with the couch.

2. You want the front legs of the couch to be *on* the rug

A trip of bare floor in front of the couch is awkward, visually, and a real tripping hazard. Putting the couch on the rug also keeps it in place.

I'm not sure what you mean by an attached "chaise." Is that a sectional? Kinda like this?



If it is, you want the edge of the carpet to be under the feet of both legs of the sofa. In this picture, they have a much larger rug. You could do with a smaller one, but you really do want it to fully engage the sofa.
