Development server set up: Trying to find info.
So I have an older PC that I just installed Fedora Core 5 on. I want to set it up as a LAMP server for web development work. Right now I have Xampp set up on my Windows PC and I would like to get away from that.

Does anyone know of any good resources for doing this? I am hoping that I can get a lead or two to cut down on my research.

My specific configuration is that both systems share the same DSL router. I guess that my biggest question right now is how do I get my windows machine to see the Linux machine? All I really need to do is use it as a web server - no file sharing between systems.

1. Check over at DistroWatch.
Also, on other CMS sites. There are LAMP distros that drop in at install time that give you a fully-functional LAMP server with everything you need.

As far as the router thing: make note of the IP address of the server. Then, goto it in your address bar of your browser, IE: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80. That should work.

Behind the router, it should be a 192.168.xxx.xxx address.

2. Ok, talked to some uber-geeks today:
They said that Ubunt has a server version of their distro that installs as a LAMP server with a simple command from the command line.

Check at the Ubuntu site for more details.

3. FC5 has LAMP ready to go...
That's exactly what i'm running: FC5, Apache, PHP, Perl & Mysql - all included.

Are you just unfamiliar with these (including linux) and need to know how to get them up and running?

As for your Windows box seeing Linux on your LAN, once Apache is running, in your Windows box's web browser, you would type http://192.168.0.3 or whatever IP address your linux box is.

4. Here's a LAMP Howto for FC 6 I just found...
Seeing that you're just starting out, you may want to take the time to go right ahead with FC6 anyway.
