I'm not UMC, so maybe there's something I don't understand...I know UMs who are quite progressive, but then there's Bush and Cheney (and Ken Lay, too).

Maybe my question is: What is the unfying principal of the UMC? Thanks for any clarification!

My experience is that most UCCs are so because of commitment to social justice, local church-based governance, intellectual freedom, and the Reformed tradition (election lossely-defined, etc).

Really, I'm not being a pain in the ass here (well, maybe I am, but not on purpose)...what draws George Bush, Dick Cheney and the many UMs I know together?
