| My daughter checked in from a youth retreat. |
|
She's down in Montreat, NC this week and she was going on and on about John Fife. I had to 'google' him because I hadn't heard his name before. He's a human rights activist, retired Presby minister and co-founder of No More Deaths group for immigrants rights. He's the main speaker this week down there at the Montreat Youth Conference. She said she's concerned that so many high-schoolers just blew him off and said he talked too long, was too controversial, etc. She, on the other hand, is loving his talks. She said that many of her peers just don't get it and the topics are really dividing some down there. The first day he spoke on global warming/taking care of the earth since we're the stewards and there is only one earth. What is there not to understand about that? I was worried opinions would lean toward the 'fundamentalist' vision and I had coached her on how not to lose her cool with kids that may/may not be hold the same views she did or even hold a civil conversation with her about certain topics.
Anyway, she's really enjoying it! I just wanted to post to someone who cared about what teens are up to these days. She said there are approximately 1600 teens down there this week, and the conference runs for 6 wks with similar attendance.
I'm happy for her.

Montreat is a great place, lots to see and do there and in Black Mountain.
I wish there were more Presbys like John Fife, but that reaction is typical of kids. They may not appreciate his speech for a few years. ;-)

I've never heard of John Fife, either. I think more and more people of faith are coming around to seeing that we need to protect the Earth. I'm glad your daughter is having a good experience.
