this is a quote from a talk by the head of my Order, Pir Zia Inayat Khan, who, in a webcast, gave a talk on the history of Sufism. It is very interesting, especially the part about Sufis translating other scriptures, including the Vedas and Bagavad Gita. He also mentions the fact that the Qur'an says there have been thousands of prophets, and that each people has been given a prophet-so all should be honored. At another point, he says that Sufi sages have interpreted the Qur'an to say that at the time of one's death, one will be faced with a God concept not their own, that they may deny, before seeing a God concept that conforms with their own beliefs. The point of that bit was that one may wish to be open minded about the true nature of God.
Very fascinating stuff. You can go to www.sufiorder.org and click on Pir Zia's webcasts in the upper right hand corner to listen.
