Steve Cropper of Booker T and the MGs

Booker T & The MGs "Time is Tight" (Live 1970)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8ceAPtJkbvs&mode=related&search

"Featuring extremely rare live footage of original MGs drummer Al Jackson, jr., one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock. John Fogerty & Creedence Clearwater look on in awe from the stage wings as Booker T and crew do their thing. Apologies for brief video glitch about a minute in."

Memphis sound, old school SOUL. Gotta Love it.

1. Oh, man - they were the GREATEST!
Did you see that documentary about Stax on PBS? What a beautiful thing that label was, and I am a HUGE BT & MGs fan, so it was such a thrill to see them interviewed (except the late Al Jackson, Jr., of course), plus footage and stills I hadn't seen before. Not to mention Carla Thomas, the Staples Singers, Sam & Dave, David Porter and Isaac Hayes, the Mar-Keys, the Bar-Kays, Otis Redding (!!!), and so many more brilliant, wonderful musicians.

I have seen that video you link to before, and it's always great.

Have you ever seen the movie "Up Tight"? BT & the MGs did the soundtrack, including the immortal "Time is Tight." I've never been able to find the movie, but I've been listening to the soundtrack for many years and loving every note.

Wow, thanks for the excuse to rant about one of my favorite bands. :yourock:

3. yes, I did see it.
Yes, I saw the PBS documentary, but not the movie "Up Tight."
(I had forgotten about my post here, so sorry for not answering you sooner, klook.)

The first youtube link I posted is now gone due to the usual "removed due to terms of use violation." , but someone else brought it back (for awhile at least):

I bet you're a traditional delta blues fan too, right?

2. Coincidence
I just did my first post on the musicians group on DU yesterday, naming Cropper in response to the question of who are great underrated guitarists.

4. Steve Cropper helped invent it...
... He played a maple neck Telecaster with very heavy gauge strings for lots of tone. His style was very spare, but every note was just right.
Saw a video of Duck Dunn playing with Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino, with Ronnie Wood and Carl Perkins on guitar, but I can't find it anymore.

Thanks for this thread-everybody playing today owes these guys.

5. Speaking of all these names
have you guys tried this?
http://www.pandora.com/
It's terrific! Of course, you cannot be on dial up, which I was until about 2 weeks ago.
What's great is you can select just about anyone who has ever recorder and this service provides you with similar music. Great stuff this! :)

7. Pandora radio is great! I have Slim Harpo, Canned Heat, and Blind Willie McTell,
none of whom are on the regular radio...

I love it.
