| How is the Goldfinch moult going in your area? |
|
The North American Goldfinch may migrate South or it may be lingering around in the North looking to spot a thistle feeder for their favorite seed. This little bird moults very quickly from olive-drab in the Winter to bright yellow in the Spring. The darker bar markings on the wings and on top of their head remain the same. Also the white markings are still visible.

This year - they are looking like we'll have an early Spring in New York.
I actually do keep written records of 1st sightings of returning birds like Robins and Red Winged Blackbirds.
For the last few years - I've also recorded the dates of the departure flight frenzy as the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds prepare to migrate South.
