Went to Raccoon State Park/lake here hoping to see duck varieties

alas it was so hot out that there were none to see (according to a woman fishing with her daughter) I was also bummed since the common yellow throat and warblers are said to frequent the park. All I saw were red-winger blackbirds (which I do love) and a blue heron.

Better luck next time! We did see a few butterflies, though.

1. Wrong time of year for a variety of ducks

Go back this fall during migration - October and November, and you'll get your ducks. As far as warblers go, it all depends on what habitats you were in. If you weren't in open, scrubby areas, then you wouldn't have had the common yellowthroats; other areas with woods might have had some, but if you were there in the heat of the day, it's a good bet they weren't being active.

3. Family's well

My son is 16 months and refusing to walk - he can do it, he just won't. Stubborn, I guess.

4. mine wanted to walk pretty much out of the gate, he was always trying to

stand- walked at 10 months. They do it when they are ready, though. Is he cruising? Toddler years are fun, if a bit exhausting...


Teens are exhausting in a different way!

5. Cruises pretty fast actually

Part of the problem I think is that he's so quick on all fours that he doesn't have much motivation to switch to bipedalism. I'm not worried. He'll need to walk when we go looking for birds!

I think it's great for kids to be as familiar with nature and the outdoors as possible early if you can.


My son was teasing me at lunchtime about not being able to get the binoculars up to my face fast enough to catch birds he had already spotted as we walked on a local trail after lunch (with the requisite amount of teen boredom...;)
