| Does weight-lifting while taking antibiotics, cause muscle/tendon tears? |
|
I am unfortunately needing to take antibiotics and someone is telling me that their doctor said that exercise and weight-lifting while taking antibiotics can cause tears in muscles, ligaments, tendons (the story wasn't clear on which or what).
The initial condition the antibiotics were prescribed for is healed but I am supposed to take the whole ten days of it anyway.
I will be seeing the doctor Wednesday and will ask, but was hoping to get a bit of general info on the topic, here. Not a happy thought, that I might have to quit exercise and weight-lifting for a week. :-( :-( :-(

I know that one antibiotic flouro-somethingorother (it's like flouroquinolonones, and usually, the drug ends in -oxin or -floxin, as I recall) can be a huge liability while strength training, in that it can be a catalyst in causing muscle tears. If that's what you're taking, stay away from the weights. Something like amoxicillin should't be a problem.
Best advice? Ask the doctor about your specific antibiotic. Best answer in the world.

| 2. Thank you! ... so it sounds like some do and some don't. ...... |

I'll hold off on weight-lifting and exercise until I ask the doctor.
Maybe I'll start an exercise withdrawal thread. :(

Give him/her a call in the am and ask. Hold off on the lifting until you get a definite answer. Cardio shouldn't be a problem though, so long as it's not TOO strenuous.
