Native protesters occupying construction site vow to remain as deadline passes
CALEDONIA, Ont. (CP) - Native protesters are vowing to continue their occupation of a southern Ontario housing development despite a passed deadline set by the courts to vacate the land.
Janie Jamieson says they've been at the site for 22 days and have no plans to leave now. Last week, an Ontario Superior Court judge ordered the protesters to end the occupation by Wednesday afternoon or face jail time.
Some 400 protesters were on hand as the deadline passed without incident, with no visible police presence at the scene just outside Caledonia. <snip>
The protesters say the subdivision is on land that was stolen from Six Nations and still belongs to them.
