(BCN) SAN FRANCISCO Members of the Inland Boatman’s Union and the Masters, Mates and Pilots Union were proud to celebrate with indigenous people this Columbus Day as members of the International Indian Treaty Council refused to cross the picket line in solidarity with the workers, Rudy Evenson, spokesman for the National Park Service said.
Protests entered their sixth day today at Pier 33, where former Blue and Gold employees demanded they be offered jobs with Hornblower Yachts Inc., the new operator of the National Park Service’s Alcatraz tours.
According to Chip Way, spokesman for Masters, Mates and Pilots, 55 union workers previously employed with the Blue and Gold Fleet have not been rehired since the National Park Service awarded Hornblower Yachts the Alcatraz Island tour boat contract in May 2006. The new service began on Sept. 25.
“This type of situation certainly isn’t how anyone wants to view the city of San Francisco,” said Hornblower spokeswoman Tegan Firth, of the protests.
