Near-loss of American Indian dancing produces new backers

A budget crisis at Santa Rosa Junior College that nearly killed a 25-year tradition of American Indian ceremonial dances instead brought the performances new life Sunday.
North Coast tribes, alarmed at the near loss, are now banding together to plan and fund future performances at SRJC's annual Day Under the Oaks.
Buoyed by a last-minute fund-raising campaign that rescued this year's performance, the tribes are also hoping to provide money and expertise to improve a campus museum devoted to American Indian exhibits.
"Our dream and our hope is to make the museum a living classroom," said Brenda Flyswithhawks, an SRJC professor and an Eastern Cherokee. "As native people, we walk in two worlds. This will be a bridge between the native and non-native communities."
