LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. - Each year, firsthand memories of the Holocaust grow more distant as fewer survivors of the slaughter remain.
"The only way there is going to be meaning is if we remember," Dolly Shuster, board member of the Lancaster Jewish Community Center, said Sunday, during a service for Yom HaShoah.
Yom HaShoah is the day of remembrance for the approximately 6 million Jews systematically put to death by Nazi Germany in the 1930s and '40s. On Sunday, it was also an opportunity to dedicate a new Holocaust library and pass the torch of remembrance to a younger generation.
"Every year we light six candles, one candle for each (million) of the 6 million," Shuster said.
