TWO anti-women amendments being tacked on to the appropriations act--needs action NOW.
Edited on Thu Mar-05-09 12:51 PM by Shakespeare
The first is the Vitter amendment (the summaries below are from Planned Parenthood's website):

"David Vitter has proposed an amendment to immediately eliminate federal Title X family planning funding for Planned Parenthood affiliate health centers. If he succeeds, this attack on Planned Parenthood would have a devastating impact on hundreds of thousands of people who rely on them for basic health care."

*edited to remove a link that had my personal info on it*

And now Jim DeMint has tacked on an amendment that would limit access to birth control:

"Senator DeMint, a long-time opponent of family planning, has submitted an amendment to remove affordable birth control provisions from the bill, claiming that the vital legislation is nothing but an earmark for Planned Parenthood. But here are the facts: this fix does not provide funding to Planned Parenthood — or anyone else! It simply fixes a mistake in the law that put up a roadblock for pharmaceutical companies who wanted to offer cheaper drugs to health clinics."

There's a petition through Planned Parenthood's website that you can sign, and I'd also strongly encourage you to call your senators about this (senate switchboard number is 202-224-3121). Just because the GOP is out of power doesn't mean they're going to let up on their attacks on women's rights.

2. Do you have a link to the petition?
I can't call at work, but I can sign the petition - I just don't see it on the link.

4. I'm looking on the website, and I haven't been able to find it yet. I get them through email.
If you sign up for email action alerts from them, you'll probably get it that way. I'll keep looking in the meantime, and see if I can find a link anywhere.
