| Recommend a book on preserving food? |
|
I'd like to learn the old-fashioned arts of preserving food that I, and others, grow in season. I sense that these are the kinds of skills that we'll all be needing soon. Any recommendations as to a good book out there?

| 1. If you live in a rural area I'd recommend |
|
the county extension agent's office, sometimes known as the 4-H folks. Lovely booklets all for free. :)

| 3. Sadly, not a rural area. Heart of Long Island. |

But, I think we do have an extension program through Cornell. I'll check it out!

| 2. You absolutely MUST get a copy of Carla Emery's bible of home |
|
food production/preservation: Encyclopedia of Country Living.
She covers gardening, farming, livestock (raising, butchering, preserving) and MORE. Cheesemaking, making money from home on the homestead, etc etc etc. I couldn't live without this book.

| 6. Ball Blue Book of Preserving |
|
This is the one I learned how to can from. It is also covers freezing & dehydrating food.
I think the first edition was printed 40 or 50 years ago. It's been updated several times.
