OK so why do I pay these "stylists" $20-40 a shot? I just cut my hair

myself (with a little help from hubby on the back) and it looks better than it has since I left my gal in CA (who cut it the way I suggested)

cut the bangs at eyebrow level, then using that line as a guide, pull up everything else to that line, trim "sideburns" and voila!

well, I guess I just found another way to save some $$$ every year

1. I'm lucky, there's a beauty school down the street

They give $5 haircuts. Most of the time better (and never worse) than the $20-40 I used to get before.
I'm never going back to the high priced salons as long as they stay there...

2. I'm a licensed cosmetologist

I have no problem with getting my hair cut at the local beauty school. We all had to learn by using a real, live, human head of hair and you can be reasonably sure the teachers won't let a student butcher your hair. When I was in school I appreciated the people who used the school for their beauty services. It was a bargain for our patrons and we got the hands-on training we needed. :)

3. Unless you have curly hair.....

I have never, ever had a decent haircut (from anyone, student to long experienced, basic shop to expensive salon) because everyone insists on cutting my hair wet.... and my hair curls, so when it is cut wet and dries, it never looks the way it was supposed to, and be DAMNED if I'm going to blow dry it straight....

4. i have super curly hair and that's why I was brave enough to try

it's pretty forgiving compared to straight hair. I figured if I had a "sprong" sticking out, i could address it

10. Sounds like my daughter

She has very thick very curly hair. I read your post about Roseann Roseannadanna and it made me giggle. But I digress.....my daughter has found a very talented student at the local beauty school. This dear child has been able to give my daughter a haircut she absolutely loves. I do understand very well the challenges you face with your hair. :)

25. I just started going there - and I love it!

The hair cuts are $12 instead of $60+ and the highlights are $30, not $120+.

5. Unfortunately I have very thick,

curly hair so I wouldn't dare cut my own, except for trimming my own bangs now and then. I do save money though by maintaining a blunt cut--one length. I go to the local Cost Cutters. For about $16 including tip I get the same results as I was getting going to a fancy salon paying about $30.

12. i was desperate

and soooo sick of bad haircuts

my attitude was "I can screw up my own hair cut and not have to pay for the privilege" and got a pleasant surprise, I figured the worst that would happen is i'd have to go to super cuts and pay someone to "fix" it and knew I was leaving plenty of length if it needed help LOL

I had told my employee that as I gonna do it and when she came in yesterday she looked at me and said "you did you hair, it looks good" then she looked at it again and said "Wow it looks REALLY good! I mean it really really looks GOOD!"

8. A blunt cut on me and 24 hours of humidity and I'm....

Rosanna Rosannadanna.... - hair 3 feet wide. Plus, it's fine (the curl gives it the appearance of mass, but don't let it fool you...). I wouldn't even call it thick; that being one of the traits of curly hair; fewer follicles on the head (that's how we get it.)

No bangs, because then I just have a curly halo. No real layers - Curly earmuffs result.

It's been a frustrating couple of years, and I will never cut it more than a trim again. Once it grows back out, it's staying long.

9. that's what I looked like before I got the sissors out yesterday

i called it "dandlion head" cuz it was round, flat on top, POOF to the sides and bunched up on my shoulders

it looks so much better now and lots lighter but still long enough I can pull it up when the temps soar

6. I cut all of our hair at home.

Of course my hair is stick straight and I just wear it long. I do get it trimmed maybe once a year to get the dead ends off. We invested in a pair of Wahl clippers and I do all of the boys' hair, including my husbands. Well, he is bald on top, so he clips the rest and I just make sure the back is straight. We have three sons so it is easy to clip their hair. The barber shops and salons want at least $10 (and I like to leave a good tip) to cut their hair and my first son was absolutely terrified of having his hair cut. It wasn't worth the effort. They are so young and don't really care so for now we do it ourselves and save money.

13. I like Beauty Schools

and if you have simple lines to cut, that's great.

I had mine cut about 3 weeks ago. I bought a package to get my hair cut, some beauty work done, etc, all for the cost of one hair cut. I still have 3 other sessions to go. I love my hair cut because when I discovered I lost my hair dryer, I still can style it wet, and it looks great after awhile.

15. I use a "Flowbee". Plugs into the vacuum cleaner, and no mess!

I bought mine years ago to cut my kid's hair. But they ended up wearing it long. So I use it on myself. You plug the cutting head into the vacuum cleaner hose, and the power supply into the cutting head and wall. There are various spacers that plug ito the cutting head so you can vary the length of the cut. There is not even one tiny stray hair left at the end of the job, so no clean up.

The thing works by the vacuum pulling your hair straight up and shearing off the ends. you can get a nice uniform cut. I am a woman, by the way. You can still buy them on-line http://www.flowbee.com/

16. super short

I cut my hair very very short, twice a year, with my husband's recharcheable Norelco Multitrim. I set the haircutting attachment to the maximum length, 9, for the top, 8 for the top rear and top edges, 5 for the sides, and 2 for around the ears and in back by the neck. Cleanup is easy, I just lay down newspaper in the tub, stand in the tub naked to cut my hair, gather the trimmings into the newspaper & throw into a trashbag next to the tub, then shower away remaining trimmings.

I just did it this morning, and I can't describe how clean and cool I feel now! And it doesn't take more than a tiny dot of shampoo to wash my hair now, and afterward it dries within a couple minutes.

17. my hair's straight and almost to my waist now.

dh trims the ends maybe twice a year. my sister wants me to get into getting it styled, etc. why would i want to take on all that extra bother and cost? this way when it's hot, i throw it up in a ponytail, or let it down when it's cold. could never understand hair preening.

19. I'm with you.

My hair isn't nearly as long as yours, but is almost to my shoulder blades. It's worn in one braid down my back, with the ends snipped occasionally. I stopped coloring it years ago and now its dark brown with silver streaks, which I like.

Occasionally, mother "suggests" (via other relatives) that I "do something with your hair." However, I like it just the way it is -- and to paraphrase you, I don't want the bother and expense, and don't like fussing with it.

23. Isn't that the truth! Long hair is easier! I don't have to "style" it every day

and it is so versitile. I haven't had long hair (long meaning 2" past my shoulder) for over 35 years. I have wanted it, but never had the patience to grow it out. Plus many years working in a beauty salon didn't help either. When you work in a salon, you are ALWAYS wanting to do something to your hair. So now it is halfway down my back and I will continue to just let it grow. I wear ponytails, frenchbraids (I do them myself), half ponytails, buns, twists with hair clips....or just straight down. Most of the ways I wear my hair takes less than 2 minutes to do. It can't get easier than that!

18. I don't cut my own hair.

It's very thick and wavy. I wash it every night in the shower and let it dry on my pillow when I'm asleep. When I get up in the morning I have some ringlets. If it gets to shoulder length it's so heavy I almost can't wash it thoroughly.

I have so much hair I'm afraid to cut it myself. However, I do go to the Sally beauty supply and get my own hair color and H2O2 and conditioner to turn me from a dishwater brown w/gray kiddo to a lovely light blonde. That saves a lot of money. I use Wella permanent color. I changed from Clairol after an employee who knew his stuff recommended it. He said everybody should have the color of hair they had when they were five. Mine was very light blonde then.

I go to a cheap chain salon for cuts.

Bad hair cutters at assembly line shops give me pudding bowl haircuts.

I've found a good cutter at Penney's. I think 20 bucks a pop is reasonable for her expertise.

24. For those who don't want to do without a stylist...

... what do you have, or what can you do, that a stylist near you might also need?

A lot of stylists, even people who charge $40 at a salon for a haircut and wash, still don't make a lot of money. Supplies, work clothing, and chair rent have to come out of that for someone who is self-employed. The clothing is a big expense - a stylist has to look professional and fashionable while working with chemicals on his or her feet all day, and between the color, bleach, and loose hair, a lot of stuff gets ruined very quickly.

You might be able to work out a beneficial barter arrangement. A friend of mine, who is a self-employed stylist and rents a chair in a salon, has a few barter clients. He doesn't have a car, so sometimes we exchange transportation (like trips to the grocery outlet) for hair.
