FRANKFURT - A convicted German cannibal returned to court on Thursday for a retrial to determine if his killing and eating of a willing victim amounted to murder.

In a “slaughter room” fitted out with butcher’s bench, meat hook and cage, Meiwes severed Brandt’s penis and they both tried to eat it.

“Due to the consistency of the penis, this did not succeed, either raw or fried,” Koehler said.

When Brandt fell unconscious, Meiwes slit his throat, pulled out his organs and chopped off his head. The next day, he froze portions of his flesh, eating some 44 pounds of it over following months.

The 41-year-old computer technician is charged with murder, even though the victim allegedly volunteered for his fate by replying to an internet advert.

The gruesome incident was all captured on camcorder and the footage is expected to form part of the evidence

I think one of them was suicidal for sure. Not sure why worrying about how one croaks in a suicide is any more or less depraved or deranged than any other form of suicide, and there are lots of suicides the world over, not just in modern "civilized" societies in the West.

No. Some people are batshit crazy and it's wrong to generalize to an entire culture based on that, unless you're willing to say the same thing about Americans because of John Wayne Gacey and Jeffrey Dahmer, or people who fling themselves into oncoming rush hour traffic or off a tall bridge or by eating too many viagras or whatever.

I was being "deliberately provocative." No, one shouldn't generalize too much. But I do think that the existing "Western culture" of material pursuit above all else is feeding a festering emotional illness in many. Look at Iraq, what is being done to the Iraqi people. There's little veneer of civility there, other than that most of the killing is done from an impersonal distance. Yes, the veneer is thinner than most think.

that veneer is pretty thin over all of us - and it doesn't take a lot to expose it.

People who believe through fear or experience or depression that life is inherently unfair probably are a little closer to the tipping point than others. Add to that our creative ability to ideate almost anything, and absurd ideas like cannibalism and auto-cannibalism take hold just as easily as the idea of jumping from bridges.

It is unsettling though - some days I wonder how many normal looking people driving down the road next to you are really all the way out there. Probably a lot more than we'd like to admit.
