What stops me from seriously entertaining the notion is that such a move would almost certainly provoke a nuclear war. The US would never sit back and letting other countries invade it. So I think we're safe from that outcome.
What I do see in the alliance between Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, Iran and China is the distinct possibility of the mother of all economic battles. Iran and Venezuela, for the time being, do supply enough of our oil and control enough of its flow to cause us headaches. And I don't think I need to mention that at least in the case of China, they have us by the short hairs because they carry a huge part of our debt. If they ever decide to call in the loan, we'd be so screwed we might wish to be invaded.
Good rant, though! More people need to start thinking in terms of potential blowback for our foreign policy. It's what got us 9/11.
