I was a very heavy drinker. In my final year of drinking I would drink a gallon of vodka about every 3 days. I am also definately gay. I have never, and would never dream of, abusing a child. I don't care if Foley drank a distillery worth of booze. He is responsible for what he did. The pages aren't, the priest who abused him isn't, Jim Bean isn't, Mark Foley is.

I am tired of having this creatin and his posse blaming everyone but himself for what he did. There are literally thousands of gay addicts in this country who don't abuse kids. We shouldn't have to shoulder his blame.

I'm a straight recovering alkie. Kids were never my thing under any circumstances. I spent 10 years as a counselor for a huge organization and dealt with all kinds of people with all kinds of problems. Many had been sexually/physically/mentally abused as children, some admitted to being abusers. The abusers come from all walks of life, all kinds of backgrounds, all races, and both sexes.

Focusing on a single group as more inclined to child abuse is as repugnant as focusing on a specific race as more inclined to bank robbery or forgery.

Just think of all the people who know they need help and can't afford it.

Foley had the benefit of insurance, paid for with U.S. tax dollars, but he chose not to use it to get some counseling and therapy. That's like a 52-year-old with dental insurance letting their teeth rot to pieces and then blaming their mother for feeding them too much sugar as a kid.

Right on the heels of the tragedy in Lancaster, Foley's excuse just really makes me want to throw a brick at him.

And alcoholism adds its own diseased world to the underlying problems, making them much worse. For instance, many people with clinical depression get sick of their meds and choose to self-medicate with booze...or else they reject the ever experimental meds altogether and just medicate with booze or other dope.

In any case, I appreciate your post. Foley has lots of problems, no doubt, but he chose to become part of the political elite and deny them. Such a travesty that other people in Congress chose not to help him.
