'Brokeback' a Quiet Box Office Boon

LOS ANGELES - Who's afraid of a couple of gay cowboys? Not moviegoers, who helped "Brokeback Mountain" post the highest per-screen average over the film-flush holiday weekend.

The Ang Lee film, which follows the 20-year forbidden romance between two roughneck ranch hands, earned $13,599 per theater, compared with $9,305 for weekend winner "King Kong" and $8,225 for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."

The big question is whether "Brokeback" can maintain its momentum as it moves from selected cities, where audiences are receptive to the subject matter, to suburbs far and wide, where that might not be the case.

Early numbers — and early awards buzz — establish the picture's staying power, industry insiders say. "Brokeback" earned a leading seven Golden Globe nominations.

Oh, that's right...there is none!

There was a good article in today's paper about how the Christian Right is making a concerted effort NOT to boycott or protest this movie, because it would give it free publicity. At least they finally caught on to THAT silliness! But, the article went on to say that the Fundies were so sure this horrible, anti-Christian movie would fail under it's own terrible sins, that they wouldn't need to start up any protests. But, if it turned out that the movie was making inroads, then they'd start hitting the circuit and doing the usual fire-and-brimstone anti-fag stuff. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

for this type of movie. These films usually aren't box office smashes but I am surprised that the film so far has done fairly well for itself

at my office to a mental institution. She keeps asserting that the movie, along with the coverage of Elton John's civil union ceremony, is part of "a gay agenda."
It's fun to watch her discomfort every time we bring the movie up at work. She's an extra crispy bucket of fundie crazy.

I mean, "the best gay-themed film I ever saw" is hardly a glowing endorsement. How many are there, at least, films that make it to the multiplex instead of directly to cable or the video store?

I just watched that Maggie Gyllenhaal flick, "Happy Endings," the other night. Very good movie, and while it wasn't a "gay film" in the way Brokeback is, gay is a big theme in the movie. I've seen several gay-themed art-house type films just in the last year, a most were pretty good. But, I think if you are going to go to investors with a gay-themed project, it had better damned well be good, otherwise it isn't going to get funded anyway. Therefore, the quality of this genre tends to be a bit higher than your average Adam Sandler flick anyhow.

But I don't really know. I'm just makin' it up as I go along, just like life!

In my opinion, the multi layered beauty of the film, the universal themes, far transcend the conceit of the gay story -- the fact that this is two men is really, in some ways, beside the point.

It doesn't look like a movie I'd care to see, either, but I'm in agreement with you that I hope it pisses fundies off. :)
