Poll question: How will history remember "W" ?

In 1980, When George H.W. Bush was running for the Republic* Party nomination for President, he said something of interest. While discussing his public service with a reporter, he admitted that his biggest fear was that he would not be able to live up the the high standards of the Walker family name. GHWB's greatest fear was that his entrance into politics could in some way besmirch the Walker family name.

IMHO, Poppy's greatest fear has come to fruition - "DubYa". That "W" between George and Bush stands for Walker.

My question to you is this - How will History come to remember "W"?

Historians aren't going to be able to bullshit Slapass's legacy the way they did Reagan's and be taken seriously. The simple reason is that we have the internet now. All we knew about Reagan is what his corporate-controlled media reported (yet even then, there was a Dan Rather or two that kept them honest). There wasn't really a widespread underground media such as the world wide web like there is now. We knew of the Reagan Admin's misdeeds, but we were brushed off as "commie, leftie, democrat kookbag conspiracy theorists" by the droolers, which sadly enough was 3/4 of the country.

Let's call a duck a duck: the only people that really prospered under * were well-monied people and corporations. His elections were dubious at best, stolen by the corporate politburo at worst. Middle class people lost their jobs and those that were lucky enough to replace them did so with either a lower paying job or two lower paying jobs to make up the difference. The worst terrorist attack on American soil happened on his watch (and arguably, with his foreknowledge) and 5 years later STILL has not been avenged. There were two failed ego wars, both of which continue to kill their citizens and our soldiers daily. His administration is wrought with more scandal and corporate corruption than you can shake a stick at. He arguably is running this country the way he ran his business - with a drunken hand on the throttle, looking out for himself and his cronies first and screwing the people he's supposed to be serving. He's not done ONE THING RIGHT since the 2000 theft.

There's more of an open communication between real people worldwide that were affected by and still feel the affects of this administration's policies. No matter what political affiliation, we don't easily have the wool pulled over our eyes as we did in the 80s. While many people would have wholeheartedly rah-rah'd a cowboy war back then in the spirit of the country, nowadays this joke of a leader and his failures, most glaringly Vietraq, smell worse than a landfill in 100 degree weather.

You don't want to grave-piss, but seriously, how are historians going to retain their integrity dishing out a shimmering novella of supposed * accomplishments when everyone knew how things REALLY were? How silly would they look when it's obvious these times SUCK? The media can invent their own reality all they please, but history HAS to retain some kind of credibility.

Seems to me that among Presidents there are maybe three groups.

First, the ICONS. The Presidents who have become mythic heroes like in Wagnerian opera. We know who these guys are. We see them on our money. They have memorials on the Tidal Basin. The Republicans desparately want to get Reagan into this group, because, right now, all they've got is Lincoln. Personally, I hope that I never live to see that happen. Kennedy and Truman may be considered icons or runners up.

Then, there is a large number of Presidents who were either okay guys or no one knows or cares much about them. Grover Cleveland, Rutherford B. Hayes, Zachary Taylor, James Monroe, etc.

Then, there are Presidents who have a black mark against them. Andrew Johnson for almost getting impeached. Ulysses S. Grant for having a famously corrupt administration. Warren G. Harding for Teapot Dome. Martin Van Buren and Herbert Hoover just for being President when a major depression occurred. Richard Nixon for Watergate and for having to resign.

So, where do ya think Dubya will land?

Yeah....that's what I think, too.

Just to give credit where credit is due, the GOP should have TWO icons. I would put Teddy Roosevelt in the category of Icon along with Lincoln.

For us, I would list our Icons as (in chronological order): Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and John Kennedy.

Right now, most historians (myself included) list two presidents as "Failures": Grant and Harding.

I guess for Dumbya, we're going to have to find a new category below "failure". Might I sugges "Total, Irredemable Disaster"?

When I was a child, my friends and I assumed that the V-sign meant Victory, and the W-sign meant War.

27. He's the worst goddamned President we've ever had.

He's got the militant expansionism of James K. Polk, the incompetent oversight of Ulysses S. Grant, and the old-boy criminal corruption of Warren G. Harding, all wrapped into one embarrassing package.

The worst part of it is that when you go back and look at those other three Presidents, each of whom probably qualified as "worst ever" at their own point in time, it's easy to see that their stain on the Presidency didn't just last the length of their own terms.

Oh no.

In each case those terrible Presidents were succeeded by multiple Presidents who were almost as bad. Polk was followed by Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, and *'s own drunken manslaughtering great-great-great-uncle, Franklin Pierce. Grant was followed by machine politician figureheads Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, and Chester Arthur (and the GOP had to steal an election to get Hayes in the door). Harding spawned Coolidge and Hoover, a mini-depression of his own and the big one by the end of the decade.

But maybe, just maybe, the government-wide veil of corruption that has again descended on Washington with the coming of George W. Bush, the unchecked militancy, the willingness to deceive and frighten the voters, the Ribbentrop-esque diplomacy, the disenfranchisement and the methodical vacuuming up of middle America's savings will be recognized as what it is: criminal enterprise on the grandest scale ever attempted, anywhere.

Maybe this time, we'll change things so permanently that people like George W. Bush are imprisoned as the criminal minds that they are before they have a chance to further gnaw at the pillars of our once-great society. Maybe the next President will realize that our nation teeters on the brink of financial and moral collapse, not because we haven't saved and don't prostrate ourselves before a particular name-brand magical sky pixie, but because we've been robbed, robbed of our electoral power, our financial independence, our future, our reputation and perhaps even our optimism and hope.

Maybe. But Clio, the Goddess you can usually count on to make her point if you weren't paying attention the first time, ain't holding her breath.

Historians are suckers for dramatic policy changes, and will ignore all sorts of things if a President was responsible for one. Bush's freedom doctrine is the most important US foreign policy shift since Truman started containment, but has been seriously fucked up by Iraq. His legacy will either end up like LBJ or Truman, depending on how Iraq looks in the long run. If it ends up as a chaotic Iranian puppet Bush's legacy will be shit, if it ends up a stable democracy Bush will be hailed as the visionary leader who changed the world.
