Say this is my body and you cannot use it.
There will be no need for birth control. Soon the men young and old with flowers and gifts in hand (And useful concessions) will be on their knees begging.
And you will tell them; "Go get YOURSELF fixed. Then we will negotiate."
I know of several household where this plan worked really well.

Hilarious, and I'm sure it would have an effect. We could call it the "New Lyssistrata Movement", that would certainly fit.
Lyssistrata, you may or may not remember, was the title of one of the funniest Greek plays ever. Lyssistrata was a wife who was sick of all the men constantly going off to war, so she led a movement with the other wives, the movement's main goal being to refuse sex to their husbands until they quit wars entirely. Needless to say, it worked like magic!

I can only speak for myself though. Once we had our agreed upon and planned two kids, my husband got his vas. This was 22 years ago next month. Imagine if your only choice is "god's will"? Snip, snip. Sorry, guys. Easier for your, than major surgery for us.

But it greatly reduces the chances of being able to father a child, it's pretty expensive, and is a fairly major surgery.
Besides, then aren't we simply using vasectomies as birth control?

|
Yes, vasectomy is a form of birth control. In a dedicated relationship, both partners need to sit down and decide what method of birth control works best for them. My tubes tied or yours...or something else entirely. What if our two perfect children are killed tomorrow...do we want a semi-permanent birth control method??? Is our relationship that stable that neither of us would want children with another partner? What if we decide between us to have another child? Lots of questions. This is not a whimsical choice. BTW...worked with urologists for several years (I am a RN)...reversing vasectomies isn't as serious as say an appendectomy...more like a toncillectomy.

This isn't a choice someone should be making because they are being denied sex. It's a far more serious and important matter than that.
I know that vasectomay reversals aren't major surgery in the way an appendectomy is, but it has far reaching implications. First, anytime you're cutting into an area like that, there's a small chance of something bad happening. A friend had the procedure performed, and ended up staying in the hospital for over a week because of complications (infection I think). He's now impotent AND sterile. Second, only about 50% of men who have the reversal performed end up fathering a child.
BTW, you can't swing a cat in this thread without hitting a cat. :)

I personally think folks should use barrier contraception if they aren't in dedicated relationships. AIDS is still a problem, as are other sexually transmitted diseases.

I said it removed a choice that men have regarding their own life and health.
It's oddly hypocritical for pro-choicers to be advocating the removal of choice from men, simply because of their gender.
I strongly defend a woman's right to make her own decisions regarding her health and body, but I expect the same in return. Or does that street only go one way?

"I said it removed a choice that men have regarding their own life and health."
All I want to know is how not getting laid will affect a man's health. Or how being VOLUNTARILY sterilized will affect a man's health. Because when it comes down to a man wanting to reproduce he only has ONE ethical choice...to find a willing partner. All else would be rape.

|
Once again, I did NOT say that not getting laid affected a man's health. I said that the removal of a choice from a man affected his health. A man who has to go through two surgeries has the possibility of adverse affects on his health.
I'm not talking about voluntary sterilization - I'm speaking to the OP (and several others) that think it would be okay to remove the choice for a man by denying him sex until he gets a vasectomy.
Whether a man wants children right now or not makes no difference to what he may want in the future, and removing the choice from that man is no better than removing a woman's right to make her own choices about her body.

|
is that the choice being removed is his choice to impregnate whoever he wants to whether she wants it or not, that he shouldn't have to take no for an answer, that a woman has to have sex with any man who wants it.
And not getting laid doesn't affect a man's health. All he has to do is find a willing partner or use his hand, he doesn't HAVE to go through a surgery if he doesn't want to and he doesn't HAVE to have sex with any particular women who refuses him...for whatever reason. To think that he has that right is rape.
Nobody is going to tie him down and do the cutting. I like my men tall, blonde and sterile and it doesn't matter what YOU want, I'm not willing to compromise.

Is it any wonder the freepers are winning?
I said nothing about men "choosing" to impregnate whomoever he wants, whether she wants it or not, and it's offensive that you would project that trait onto myself or any other man, especially here at DU.
If you seriously believe that men are like that, then debate is useless.

I advocated the impregnation of any woman a man wanted to impregnate. Show me where I advocated the rape of unwilling women. That's a serious strawman argument, and is offensive to myself. Is this really your attitude towards men? That's called sexism, and is something you've claim to have been fighting against. Again I'll ask, is it a one way street? If it is, then what am I and any other man advocating for free choice in reproduction fighting for?
Please don't put words in my mouth. Requiring a man to sterilize himself because of some rigid stereotype of men is ridiculous and I pointed that out. If women should have the right to choose their own reproductive course, then shouldn't men also have that same right?

You got it, the key words choices for men choices for women. Personal and private. Keep the government off of and out of womens bodies. Every man can work to that goal too.
Men's choices are not superior to womans choices.

It's the responsibility of BOTH parties to make sure some sort of birth control is used. I wish there were more options for men (like a male BC pill). I never said that women should be solely responsible for birth control, just that it seems ridiculous to deny sex to men until they get fixed.

perhaps if abortion becomes illegal, men will fight to reverse it when they realize how many paternity suits they're going to be paying. just a thought.

| 31. I once had an on-line acquaintance who bragged |
|
that, because she had no intention of getting pregnant, she 'made' her husband get a vasectomy. My response, though I have no issue with vasectomies myself, and would have gotten one had my wife not been unable to conceive anyway, was that if SHE didn't want to get pregnant, she should've taken the steps herself to prevent herself from getting pregnant...tubes tied, whatever...
She wasn't one of my favorite people in the first place. I thought her comment was outrageous and mildly insulting.
Some months later she admitted that she was pregnant. She'd been cheating on her husband and ended up pregnant as a result.
I thought this a delicious irony.
This story told, I have to add one thing. While I personally think Tom Leykus is a buffoon, he's right about one thing. Any guy who doesn't take the steps to prevent getting a woman pregnant is just stupid unless he's absolutely certain he wants kids with said woman.

the sole responsibility for preventing pregnancy in a relationship by demanding that she torture herself and endanger her health through the use of carcinogenic, cost-prohibitive hormonal contraception can get laid, not just the ones who conceal their slimy, immature, ignorant misogyny behind a veil of acceptability because they "vote pro-choice" (read: vote in such a way that they can hope to be able to force the women they use as their fuck-puppets to make the kind of reproductive health care decisions these assholes deem "no big deal").
So guys, seriously? Stop expecting us to do all of the work, take all the risk and endure all the consequences. Want to use our bodies for your sex? Take responsibility for your biology to make that sex as safe as society has expected us to ensure it is for far too long. Ladies? It's your safety (and your dignity). You have a right to have your needs met, to be respected by your partners and to decline to share your body with a partner who isn't willing to make that exchange equitable. Stop putting up with misogyny. It's killing us.
