Classroom cupcakes face expulsion

Districts' focus on wellness may ban calorie-laden treats

NOLENSVILLE — On Shelby Heffington's birthday, her mother and big sister wanted her to have a special celebration with her kindergarten classmates.

They made yellow cupcakes and frosted them with chocolate. Sister Lauren did the sprinkles herself. And off to school they went.


"It's just a way to celebrate your child with their school," said Shannon Heffington, Shelby's mom. "Every child loves a cupcake."

That may be true, but cupcakes and other sugary treats hauled in for birthdays, holidays and class parties may soon be a thing of the past.

In response to a federal requirement to improve child nutrition, many Midstate school systems are considering cupcake-averse guidelines for this fall for class and school parties.

1. lots of teachers have banned sugar snacks for years...

Hard to blame them, I used to have enough trouble controlling my 3 when they were all hyped up on the stuff.

Like a classmate's birthday or Christmas or something like that. They're still kids.

But not because of the sugar content. They make too much mess and with budget cutbacks the cleaning crew doesn't come through as often.

How many birthdays do they have a year?

I'm bringing cupcakes for Valentines day next week, though I have to admit I feel bad about it, since I'm the health-freak mom most of the time.

6. Haven't been able to do that in our School District for decades...

but not for that reason. If you're bringing something in for a Birthday it must be from a bakery or pre-packaged, no homemade stuff allowed. That was to prevent children getting sick you know, hepatitis etc. This has been in affect here for a long, long time now.

8. My school has banned all food until after lunch

I haven't any idea if it is a state or federal initiative but I can't even bring donuts for my first or third period classes now if I so desired.
