So we finally find out why the Chief of the Capitol police resigned.

He put his son in law on the payroll. It's against the rules, but Chief Gainer said he didn't know that! Hmmmm.

Gainer said he and Darren Ohle had not known about the restrictions on hiring relatives when Ohle became an officer in 2003. There was never any attempt to conceal their ties, he said.

Friends and colleagues also said Gainer, 58, has grown frustrated over clashes with several members of Congress and top congressional staff members concerning security, administration and the handling of high-profile events.

8. He did a good job as number two on the DC force after they got

rid of a HORRIBLE chief named Larry Soulsby, who was Mr. Graft and Corruption--a TOTAL scuzzbag. When Charles Ramsey came in from Chicago, he had the skills and experience needed to clean house and get things moving in the right direction again, but it was Gainer who helped get him up to speed on the details, and as a consequence Ramsey was more effective right out of the gate than he otherwise would have been.

They made a good team, and when he went over to the Cap Police, there was already a level of trust, and that made coordination better. He was never a heavy-handed guy--they don't knock heads at DC demos; they prefer the gentle guidance technique.

I'm just guessing, but the fallout from the SOTU "balanced" arrest of Cindy Sheehan and the pro-war t-shirted cong. wife was also mentioned. It was Mrs. Bloviator who called Gainer an "idiot." (Likely setup by Rove without Mrs. B having a need to know - or as a petty tit-for-tat.)

And it may have merely been the last straw. Working for fascist thugs can tend to tire a professional person.

Someone trotted out this old rule to "get 'em, get 'em" and that's sounds more like their side to me.

The restriction was from the "bad old days" when layabouts and no-shows got put on the public dole. I would be astonished to find out that the Son-in-law was not a fully qualified officer that we were lucky to have.

Anyway, just a guess. But I wouldn't judge too harshly too quickly.
