| Poll question: Is the US more prepared to stand up to a corrupt gov't than the Germans |
|
were in the 1920-30's? Does the internet and whatever reputable news we still have keep us informed enough about the power grabs to prevent a takeover in the manner Hitler did?
With either answer, why?

The craft of public relations, backed by decades of experimental science, has created such amazingly nuanced messages that most of us cannot see our way out of them.

I would hope we're more prepared than the Germans were, but look at what has been going on, and there's only been a little bit of talk about possible actions, but nothing solid.
So the comment is we may be more prepared, but will we, indeed, stand up to our corrupt government, and if so, when? What will it take to get the ball rolling?

| 4. Newfangled technology cuts like a double-edged sword |

More and better access to all kinds of info, provided enough people are motivated to do so. Simultaneously, more sophisticated and elaborate forms of propaganda and thought control: people think, "how could that many people be lying? how could there possibly be a cover-up of such magnitude?" Familiarity breeds non critical apathy.
However, it's tricky, and of course we really have no accurate precedent to draw experience from, aside from histories less than admirable track record of the appalling atrocity that can come from a corrupt power structure's manipulation of the public mind, coupled with appeals to the lowest common denominator and xenophobic groupthink.

toward fascism, the vast majority of Americans are too comfortable with their delusion that nothing bad will happen to them because they are the "right" kind of people to actually notice what is going on. Comfort breeds complacency. Add the controlled media to the mix and nothing short of a depression will cause enough Americans to become upset enough to take notice.

There needs to be a "this thing could go either way" or "not sure if Americans of 2006 are going to be any better at preserving their Republic from Tyranny".
