OTOH, this is Chickasaw OK, which means it is probably on a reservation. For many Native Americans, tobacco is sacred and part of their religion, though I guess dip would be hard to use in tobacco ties. :)

was thinking. There is no place exclusively populated by Indians. On Osage land, you can't tell the difference from any other county in Oklahoma. You can drive from Tulsa to Pawhuska and think it's just another drive. Think of the phrase "You have been assimilated"

When I'm in Oklahoma I'm usually in the central part because that's where my immediate family lives (Edmond, OKC, El Reno and Bethany). When I can I go visit my Indian relatives in Cheyenne-Arapaho country out west.

But officially, there is one reservation in Oklahoma.

because I have a friend who is working on the Choctaw reservation in southeast OK as we speak-he's an engineer who is helping them build houses.

Edited to say that though there may be one recognized reservation, apparently the Choctaw still call the land near their governmental headquarters a reservation.

is the Chickasaw. It's strange but we have other examples, like the town Muskogee and the tribe Muscogee. And actually there are no reservations in Oklahoma, in the typical sense at least.

between ceremonial tobacco and regular smoking tobacco. I've still got some my mom's ceremonial tobacco. It was made from buffalo tallow, sumac and tobacco. It is very, very moist even after 9 years.

I spent one year in hell teaching high school history in Newcastle Oklahoma in 1974. The boys spit on the floor! It was disgusting. I changed careers after that year. lol

This was a farming community and chewing was the norm for most guys.

Sure, it's illegal for minors, but I've never heard of anyone getting arrested over it.

Chewing tobacco is widely accepted. Many adults in communities like these will allow their kids to chew tobacco. Some consider it far better than smoking.

My hubby started chewing when he was 14 years old. His parents always knew about it. He did it for years up until about 8 years ago when his brother died from sudden cardiac death. Getting arrested wouldn't have stopped him, but his brother's death did.

is out there fighting crime. Wonder what their numbers are for meth labs. Oops, sorry, some of those meth labs are really dngerous place to be.Better to target snuff users. More lucrative too. For other poster, Chickasha is not on a reservation , as I remember. Some Indian names used for towns in OK. Tecumseh and Seminole among them. But one of my brothers was born on the Bigheart ,sic?, Indian Reservation. The name was later changed, as I remember hearing about from family members.

15. When cops arrest kids for that, it's usually because the kids are trouble

When kids are being obnoxious, or they've been told to give up the cigarettes and they refuse, cops will arrest and ticket kids for possession of tobacco. The lesson is that it is easier to give it up when asked then to pay fines.

I had a cousin who was at a party where alcohol was being served and all the kids were underage. When the cops showed up, they asked each kid if he had been drinking. They all lied except my cousin, who said he had a couple of beers. They all got tickets, except my cousin, because, as the cops told the rest of them, he didn't lie about it.
