Rice 'forced to sleep on floor'

BRITAIN'S Foreign Secretary Jack Straw was rapped for ungentlemanly conduct after reportedly commandeering US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's private quarters on her official jet. Ms Rice was reported in a number of British newspapers to have graciously offered her British counterpart the use of her bed and cabin on the Boeing 757 plane and Mr Straw ungallantly accepted, leaving her to sleep on the floor.

What one newspaper called "Bedgate" is said to have happened as the political bedfellows flew to Kuwait at the weekend before transferring to a military flight bound for Baghdad. Ms Rice was in Mr Straw's northwest England constituency of Blackburn last week in a reciprocal visit after the British politician toured her native Alabama last year.

The Washington Post reported that Ms Rice's reciprocation of hospitality took place flying to Kuwait before transferring to a military flight into Baghdad. The fact that she had given up her cabin with the only bed on the plane came to light when flight attendants had trouble clearing the galley because the secretary of state was sleeping in the aisle. Mr Straw was enjoying the fold-out bed in Ms Rice's cabin which boasts enough room for a desk and seating for meetings.

27. The little girl in the picture did not die of her injuries,

horrific as they were. However, she lost 7 members of her family including her parents. I know that picture tugs at my heart strings in a way few others have, and I was so relieved when I found out that she had not died from her injuries, but felt so badly for her that she already had to deal with a significant handycap (she was born a deaf mute) and then had to suffer through a foot being blown off and the death of her family members in such a horrific fashion.

Journalism is in a sad state.

When I wrote that Jack Straw had referred to Condoleezza Rice as "Condom" instead of "Condi", and described how I had checked with two colleagues and then went back over my tape to confirm it, there were still some doubters.

It's an April Fool's joke, they said. Prove it, they insisted.
