What's your opinion of the Teamsters Union ?

5. Do they offer any group health coverage to dependants?

The position I may take offers 100% for me but only $100 a month towards a health plan for my family. $100 will not buy much of a plan.

Its great if you like decent wages and benefits, that you couldnt get without having the bargaining power of many.

Do the research to see if you agree with them. Make sure the books are open and visible to all. Its only as good as its membership demands it be.

They don't like that kind of stuff, and they have unique ways of dealing with it.

7. Ain't it the truth....

It ain't pretty. I remember hearing my father, uncles and their friends whisper about what happened to scabs that crossed the line. Not pretty:scared: But by the same token, they'll watch your back and if anyone tries to hurt you while you're going about doing your job, they'll beat them like they stole something. Just kidding...sort of. It's a support network that you'll appreciate and doubtless, need in the years to come.

8. My uncle knew Jimmy Hoffa personally and dealt with him (adversarially).

Hoffa didn't use the coarse, foul language as portrayed in the movie (Nicholson) and it was actually something my uncle thought was noteworthy. Hoffa was a hard-bargainer and a master strategist, letting very little (that was arguably legal) get in his way. He was someone who kept his word. He was NOT demonstrably crooked, although there were many who had such suspicions. What what I gather, he was no more crooked than the corporatists he had to deal with. Organized crime would've wanted control of trucking and its union, but the real question would be WHO got that control - after all, that 'family' would have one helluva lever. From what I gather, Hoffa kept it from happening by making that very same point. He was tough - but VERY fair - and his word was something you could bank on. That, in fact, may have been why he was 'disappeared' - and its anybody's guess whether it was the 'good guys' or the 'bad guys' who did it.

I'm hoping the Teamsters has kept at least as good as Jimmy Hoffa made it - pension funds notwithstanding.

9. I'm 2nd gen union family

I wouldn't be half as well of without my union.
It's a matter of negotiating individually or together.
Greed causes many companies to wish for the former, but most employers who hire union help get a better deal through lower turnovers and a more dedicated workforce.

Unions have to work with the company to make it competitive while ensuring the employees earn a living wage. Driving a company out of business does no one any good.

Unions = better living.

10. My uncle was a teamster in the 30's when it was difficult to be a

teamster. Union is the way to go.
