AFL-CIO Web site offers resources for unemployed

The AFL-CIO and Working America launched a new Web site today that offers a database of resources and advice for unemployed people looking for jobs.

A unique feature of the www.unemploymentlifeline.com Web site is the Talk With Others section where people can ask questions and give advice to others about resources.

Cara Alcantar, state director for Working America, said the Web site was created based on the needs of unemployed workers everywhere. Working America is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO that advocates for affordable health care, retirement benefits and other job-related issues for union and nonunion workers.

“When you get laid off, you don’t get a manual. And this is basically an online manual to help you out and give you resources that nobody tells you about,” Alcantar said.

The launch of the new Web site took place at the Michigan Works agency at 455 W. Fort St. During the launch, several people were in the resource center looking for information on new job opportunities.

Kevin Hunt was a truck driver for more than four years before he was recently laid off due to a lack of work.
