American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten joined AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka at a rally in Washington D.C. Thursday to protest the firing of 229 teachers.
: “What the D.C. schools have done here is terrible for children. Teachers being fired eight weeks into the school year is not the budget fix that D.C. needs. What D.C. needs is some trust and some truth from the mayor and from the chancellor.”
Weingarten says something is amiss since the city approved more money for the schools and federal stimulus money was also provided to stabilize the schools.
: “So we are demanding transparency, we are demanding accountability, we are demanding that kids services be returned to Washington D.C.”
