CHULA VISTA – Southwestern College's faculty will vote this month on whether to leave the California Teachers Association.
Full-time and part-time instructors at South County's community college will receive a ballot in the mail with three choices:
Keep a CTA-affiliated union as the agent for negotiating and enforcing a labor contract.
Break from the CTA and establish an independent local union to represent instructors.
Decline to have a union.
The state Public Employment Relations Board mailed ballots to about 2,600 part-time and full-time faculty members at Southwestern yesterday, said Les Chisholm, division chief at the board's office of the general counsel. The voting continues through Nov. 5, and the results will be announced the next day.
Joan Stroh, chairwoman of the Computer Information Systems and Electronics Department in the college's business school, said the on-campus union leadership does a good job. It's the CTA she doesn't like.
