Library to bring back Spanish fiction
Library to bring back Spanish fiction
06/27/2006

LAWRENCEVILLE — After a public outcry, the budget for Spanish fiction will be restored to the Gwinnett County Public Library, members of the Board of Trustees said Monday.

The board is expected to meet in a specially called meeting Wednesday to ratify the decision before the library’s budget year begins July 1.
“We heard from people on both sides of the issue and we heard from a lot of the press,” board Chairman Lloyd Breck said. “We are choosing to restore that line item. ... We were not trying to send any signal, but everyone seemed to think we were.”
The board’s decision to cut $3,000 for Spanish translations of popular books at a meeting earlier this month received attention in newspapers across the country.
In the week following the news, board members have received letters and e-mails from as far away as California and New Zealand from writers, professors and editors.

Well, looks like the public outcry made a difference this time.

QUE BUENO!!!!! :sarcasm:

I can imagine driving through that county (or not!). I think they shouldn't buy ANY books at all. I am sorry, but the excuse to not buy books in Spanish (or any book in any language) is bullshit. Maybe they needed more money to buy more white sheets and flammable crosses.

Have they ever heard of book DONATIONS? Why cut budgets for books? All public libraries I know receive books as donations and I have given away to a few libraries in the past.
