No more Spanish books in Georgia

This is funny!!

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The library system in this suburban Atlanta county says no mas — it won't buy any more thrillers, romance novels or other works of adult fiction in Spanish.

The decision has angered Hispanic leaders and thrust Gwinnett County — where one out of six residents is Hispanic — into the nation's immigration debate.

Last week, the library board in this fast-growing county of 700,000 people eliminated the $3,000 that had been set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming fiscal year. It offered no explanation, but the chairman said such book purchases would lead readers of other foreign languages to demand the same treatment.

Like my Mom would say: "La ignorancia es atrevida".

However, one board member, Brett Taylor, said the move came after some residents objected to using taxpayer dollars to entertain readers who might be illegal immigrants.

This proves that illegal immigrants are educated.

1. I hate to say how ignorant this is, but I'm not surprised.
Yet, those people will claim they aren't bigoted and how dare you say that to them! This reminds me of people who don't want to give needy people health care because somebody illegal might need emergency care.

8. Bigotry is like an addiction...only others can see it.
Bigots I know, don't think they're bigots.

2. They objected to buying materials for people who
might be illegal? WTH? I object to allowing this to happen because the people protesting MIGHT be racist pigs.

3. Ooh that ticks me off...
So what if they have to buy books in other languages? Geez, I mean it's not a very valid argument anyway, but what's the big deal? I'm learning Portuguese and would LOVE for my local library to have books in Portuguese so I could practice.

4. They should just ban books altogether. Some of them
illegals read English!

Really, it's hard to decide whether it's more hilarious than it is horrendous.

In a similar article, some library in Indiana is cutting off library cards to homeless kids.

:wtf: is the matter with these people. Why not just cut off your nose so we can see you coming.

lol

5. Btw, I was googling around for my great grandfather because
I knew he taught Rhetoric at the university in El Salvador until he got fed up with not being paid and decamped to Guatemala. Found these entries at the collection at Tulane.

I'm afraid to ask if this library is still there. :scared:

6. I'm so glad I have...
this little guy  or I'd be crying all the time. I never learned Spanish because when I was growing up in the 50s everybody wanted their children to be "real Americans."  I am always encouraging my Spanish speaking students to learn to read and write in both languages. How wonderful to be literate in more than one language! Anyone who discourages this is unbelievably foolish.

10. I almost lost my Spanish when I was about 11 but luckily
my mom had saved and saved and she sent me and my grandmother "home" for a month. I came back with an accent and English sounded really harsh to me for months after that.

I think we're about the same age. I was held back from kinder for a year because I was a December baby. And it's so funny because by the time I hit kindergarten, I had already been reading in Spanish for two years. The first game I learned was "Enriquezca su vocabulario" because my grandmother used to take the quiz every month and she let me play with her.

But, I learned English from teevee and more at school. So of course, they put me in the "slow" group at school until someone decided to test me IN THE THIRD GRADE. LOL! I'd already read "Little Women" twice by then. Then, they skipped me to the next grade level, making the whole public school career a little wierd.

But, boy, was I grateful for being bilingual when my kids were young. I was hired as a court interpretor and there was no way I could have paid the bills at any other job. Spanish enabled me to go back to school and get a degree -- in English. lol

11. Ignorant freaking idiots! How dare they?
A few words for those morons:

Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderon, Pablo Neruda, Ruben Dario, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Mario Vargas Llosa, Lorca, Octavio Paz, Ernesto Sabato, Alejo Carpentier, Cesar Vallejo, etc.
I could go on.

Yet, these backward idiots feel they can shut down an entire chunk of world's literature by the power of their xenophobic prejudices.

Nice going, in a global economy and an increasingly smaller world.

:banghead:
