| Barack Obama on Marijuana Decriminalization (2004) |
|
This video shows the man I voted for in November. This wasn't the man I saw today; at least not on this question.

| 1. Would you rather health care? More consensus is needed on marijuana. |
|
Everything is polarized today beyond reason.

| 2. The question today was about the economic benefits of legalization |
|
That video was about his views on decrim which he still agrees with today.
For the record I think he's wrong about the potential economic benefits, and I plan to do all I can to change his mind.

| 3. Video: Straddling the fence to keep opposing sides each think he is on their side. |

If he sounded more forceful for one side now---it is because he doesn't need to keep the other side believing in him.
But I didn't hear his recent statement.

Obama is an extremely practical man. He wants to get things done. There is no chance that, with the opposition he would face and the range of other problems requiring his attention, that he will get anything useful done. So the sensible thing is to triage that particular problem and work on things that can be done. He has got to fix the economy and the war; without those items everything else he wants is in jeopardy. He wants to move on health care, but he knows there is no chance he will get single-payer through so he is going to settle for something less. (And if we can move beyond the "if you use it you lose it" model of health insurance, it would be a big help even if the evil bloodsuckers remain in the mix.) When Obama has had the juice he has been very faithful to his consistent statements -- you saw that with the stem cell policies. I am confident that in a few years, if he can put some successes under his belt, and perhaps with more Democrats in Congress after 2010, he might move on some of these things that people feel he isn't paying enough attention to, because he will have a better chance of actually creating movement instead of getting slapped down by entrenched interests that are too powerful for him to overcome.
