Ed looked very much at ease and made his usual passionate speech. Liked the fact his first guest was a union man, too. Some of the quick zooms seemed a bit-disconcerting, but I'm sure that will be worked out. Don't get cable--what was the rest of the show like?

Schultz fills a gap. You don't like him? Exactly my point.
I am his audience. Red meat eater, pickup driving, dirt bike riding, gun shooting registered democrat and I listen to Ed every single day.
He is actually the one who converted me to Obama. Yup. Ed Schultz
I do not think that Cenk needs to be on MSNBC. His show is going strong. Will go strong. And eventually he will too have his show, but maybe not MSNBC, probably CNN Headline News.
Cenk would just target the same audience as Olbermann.
You need to think out of the box.
Cenk's time will come.
Also I believe that Obama pushed for Schultz to be on MSNBC, as Schultz was a very early Obama supporter.
That's how things work.

| 35. I agree with you about Big Eddie |
|
I like his tone, too--he got his message about the need for health care reform not from some pundit but from the people. And the fact that he's from the heartland means he understands and shares many of the values of people who don't live on the coasts. I don't always agree with what he says, but when he invited every candidate to come on his show AND said he'd host a fundraiser to pay for their expenses, I was impressed. None of the network biggies did this. I still fondly remember Kucinich's time on Ed's show.
Big Eddie will relate to the regular guy--and gal. Unlike Rush, Big Eddie shows respect towards women. I believe he's still married to his first wife, too.

Not the same demographics.
When will you understand that Ed Schultz is the best anti-Limbaugh weapon in our arsenal?
At least he will not lick Joe The F-ing Plumber's weiner like Bill Maher did on TV the other day.
Ed Schultz would probably give the guy a piece of his mind and shove it down his throat.

He speaks to middle America in a way that most other liberal talkers can't or wont. My politics are to the left or Schultz but I listen to him everyday and I think he is the guy that can take the right wing talking machine head on and make them look like fools in the process. I am not sure what you mean by Ed Schultz listeners dont come here often and they are different demographics. I see many of them on here and DU has all types of Democratic political stripes posting on here.

| 52. chknltl here, member of The Ed Shultz Show Message Board |
|
Been a member a little over a year. I don't post there often (a whopping 77 posts so far), but I enjoy ghosting through when I can. There aren't as many folks on that board as there are on others I have been involved with, (Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartman) but I find it a good place to post my thoughts-thoughts molded from my fave message board: The Democratic Underground.
I hadn't thought of it as you just put it but I think you may be spot on in that Ed Shultz may indeed be America's best weapon to combat the likes of Rush Limbaugh. I would not be surprised if a study of the listener demographics for all talk radio shows found the Ed Shultz Show and the rush limbaugh Show to have the closest demographic alignment. If this is the case, Ed Shultz may eventually grow to replace 'druggie limbaugh' as America's most listened to and influential talk radio host.
I don't know who first said it, perhaps President Jefferson, but democracy requires an enlightened electorate. IMO the big DU is a GREAT place to gain tons of that necessary enlightenment. If I could further the concept of our democracy requiring an enlightened electorate, I suggest that we lovers of democracy need to spread that enlightenment into any and all areas that we can reach as often as possible.
If, as you suggest, that Ed-Heads don't come here so often*, then imo we DUers should make it a point to go there, (and anywhere else we can find a soapbox to stand on). We should do this, not to advertise the DU but instead to share what we learn here for the betterment of all. If The Ed Shultz Show is where 'America Comes To Talk', then the DU could/should help mold, focus and fact check that discussion. It's in our own best self interest.
A bit of selfishness on my part but I kinda like the fact that Mike Malloy, Thom Hartman and soon to be re-instated Randi Rhodes often mention the big DU and cite our posts and OPs. I can't say that I have heard Big Eddie give us a shout out (yet) but I confess I'd love it if he ghosted through here as often as his peers do.
Sorry for this lengthy response AzNick but your post made me do quite a bit of thinking-thank you for that!
*(I suspect that we might both be pleasantly surprised to learn just how many DUers are fans of The Ed Shultz Show(s).

Every now and again, Ed Schultz seems to not have quite the depth of understanding necessary to discuss a topic and it can get a lil annoying if Thom Hartmann just got done laying it out again and again for anyone to understand. I know he can't listen to Hartmann's show all the time. Anyway, I have pleaded to Ed to listen to what Hartmann said about this or that subject. I thought it was funny someone else thought the same. : ) Good night, DU.

They're totally different, even though they're both left of center. He might even pick up viewers who prefer tough talk to Rachel's too-cutesy style.
Even though I don't agree with him on everything, he does speak for people who aren't well-represented: Middle America. The Repukes think they've got a lock on those people, but Ed can win them over.
The only part of Ed's show I haven't liked so far is his choice of talking heads. He had two Repukes to one liberal woman from The Nation, who was too wimpy-sounding in comparison. IMHO, Repukes get enough face time on Fox.

|
of extreme divisiveness, where he actually aggravates some people--like me. So, after watching him a couple of nights, some may start avoiding that channel completely. I'm already doing that myself. But, then, I'm worried 24-7 about everything, so maybe it's just me. I agree with you on his selection of guests, silverojo. Let's keep track of Rachel's viewing audience numbers, to see if they suddenly start going down. Good luck to you.

... I don't think they hired him because he was the best liked on radio, say, like a Randi or Sam.
MSNBC seems like they are there to grab Mr. and Mrs. BeenSleepin fer 8 to 25 years. Basically, they need to find someone I believe will reach out and grab those who can be pulled into what the hell's been going on. Shultz was not someone I'd listen to, but that doesn't seem to matter. Just please watch the ratings. I believe we are in that "building America" phase, folks.
Not a moment too soon, either.

I find it interesting that you find it interesting that just because I have a low post count you have an issue with me not liking Ed. I watch Hardball, KO, and Maddow everyday and I liked Shuster in his old time slot. I was waiting for MSNBC to give Cenk a show. Then MSNBC came out and said because of budget issues they were not going to add the new 10pm time slot ... days later they added The Ed Show --- I have never listened to him before on radio or anywhere else, he is brand new to me and I just don't care for him as much as Cenk at TYT. Ed just seems like an old guy in a suit - nothing fresh or new about him.

Name ONE liberal talk radio or TV host who is from Middle America and speaks to Middle America. Though Al Franken is from Minnesota, all his years in NYC made him sound like a New Yorker, through and through. Not to mention the fact that Al (much as I like him) is a lot more boring on radio than he is in books.
Ed Schultz is just what we need to win more center-right people over to our side.

Schultz was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia --- thought that Virgina was considered part of the 'south' ? Chris Mathews was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. David Shuster was born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana. Keith has New York covered Rachel has California covered
Now we need 45 more on MSNBC to have one from each state ;)
I hope Ed does well ... but I still want Cenk to have a show on MSNBC soon :)
Btw: Cenk grew up in East Brunswick Township, New Jersey, where he attended East Brunswick High School. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia Law School, and a former associate at the law firms of Drinker Biddle & Reath in Washington, D.C. and Parcher, Hayes & Liebman in New York City. He first became a talk show host at a Washington, D.C. radio station on the weekends while working at Drinker, before eventually shifting to full-time radio work. --- Cenk has some sexy brains!

I only pointed out that I thought it was interesting. Not really accusing you of anything. I have seen it a lot lately on DU. Cenk would have been great but Ed is great too, he can speak issues that are important to the average middle American that other liberal talkers cant including Cenk. I think it is what liberals need right now to reach people that would otherwise not listen.

I'm not really part of Ed's right leaning Dem, left leaning Repub (or centrist, etc.) demographic, so his shows don't appeal to me. BUT I think there is a ton of value in having someone like him to each out to middle America and hopefully change some moderate Republican minds. To that end I'm excited about his new show and I think he could work well in that timeslot.
With that said I think Cenk could reach young voters in a way few others out there can. His immense success (over 3 million views a month on youtube, and that's not counting the TYT website or the XM/Sirius audience) with New Media shows he can be a bridge to the internet which is huge since more and more people are going online to get their information (for better or worse, generally better IMO).
Plus it WOULD be nice to have something other than an old white guy on TV. I'm not saying anything, I'm just sayin'.

Although I have to agree with the poster here who said that this guy is filling a gap. I actually think he could do really well with this show. Think about it, who is really out there preaching the truth? Bill Moyers? Glenn Greenwald? Amy Goodman? These people have measured, thoughtful, even egg-headish dialogs with their audiences. That may appeal to me and other liberal nerds, but who's out there on the left jumping up and down and raising a stink about the failures of our democracy? Who's on the left with the populist rant that busy people who don't spend all day investigating Bush war crimes on the 'net at work can appreciate? This guy, apparently.

For some context I'm generally classified as the east coast, ivy-league, elitist brand of liberal.
Idealogically, I can be found somewhere to the left of Ghandi and Raplh Nader.
That said, I think Ed Shultz was an inspired choice. Persoanlly I'll probably still prefer Rachel Maddow (or Better yet Amy Goodman), but, as others have said, Ed fills a gap. A pinch of populism mixed in with MSNBC's progressive potpourri can only be a good thing.
