1. well, that's not really true

we talk about it, but overall we're a pretty self-centered, self-consumed nation.

2. But let's be honest

Would a townhall by a French/non English speaking Head of State be packed in this country? And would most of the audience even understand what was being said? In that sense, the stereotype is right. While most people in foreign lands seem to at least be bilingual, the same can't be said of most Americans. And then even if most of us were, there's still the issue of a lack of interest towards all things "foreign."

4. It's a mixed bag really

Some Americans are selfish and crass and others aren't. But then we must also consider the fact that after the American Revolution, the attitude in this country was that of not wanting to have anything to do with the rest of the world. And although the events of the world have forced us to be more involved, that isolationist mindset is still somewhat there.
