A guy I work with, sent me this, even though I never mentioned gay marriage at all...
"Why can't we all just get along? If the homo's want to live that way; I don't have a problem with that, as long as they do it in the privacy of their home, don't teach it to my kids and don't ask me to bless it by forcing my Pastor to marry them in my church."
My reply:
Why can't we all just get along? What is the reason why we can not get along? While some just want equal rights and fair treatment, others are hell bent on not allowing them to achieve it. Some like to keep people down and held in that idea that they are second class citizens.
I do not take issue with people that can mind their own damn business and stop meddling in the affairs of others. Unless it directly affects you or me, in a harmful manner, I could give a rats ass what others do. It is their lives and they are allowed to live it as they see fit and to do with as they so choose.
I do not see what you mean by "don't teach it to my kids"; are you referring to the teaching of tolerance or cultural awareness in the classroom? By no means is anyone advocating that Church's conduct Gay Marriages, they never did, they really do not need a Church to conduct it. They can just go to the Courthouse and have it done; if they must have a full serve, they can always go Episcopalian or Unitarian Universalist and some Catholics would hold the ceremony for them.
However, there is money to be made in it, it would be a major loss of revenue by not holding the ceremony, but that is a decision for the head of the church to make. Just how many people would become continuing members of the church if able to hold their same-sex marriage in your church? Something to think about.
But no one is at all forcing anyone to do something they do not want to do, never was the issue.

'do it in the privacy of their home' - does he mean 'assemble as a family with their kids' only in private, or does he only associate the same-gender relationships as sexual in nature. Sounds like they don't get that there would be no reason to marry if it was just about sex. Same sex couples are having sex anyway. What would marriage do but to put a damper on it. In fact, if he wants to slowly eliminate gay sex, marriage is the perfect way to do it - everyone knows couples slowly stop having sex all the time once they are married.
If these folks want to stop gays from 'being around' so much, tell the straight people to stop having so many - they're not coming from gay marriages, now are they?

Do what? LIVE THEIR LIVES?
OK...gays will keep "it" at home if straights do too. No more smooching on the subway. No more candle light dinners at public restaurants. No holding hands in the park. No more movies or tv shows or books or magazines about straight relationships or romance.
No prob!
What a stupid notion! "Just keep it at home." Gays under house arrest!

doesn't his argument actually flip his view of 'doing it for the children' on its ear? To NOT allow kids to have legally married parents, same-sex or mixed, the kids themselves are told, in fact, 'their family' is less-so in the eyes of the state and thus, the kids are less-valued as members of that society of which they should feel equal? He can't have it both ways.

| 4. it's a stupid argument to begin with. |
|
when i got married by a judge, it was a civil marriage, not a religious one. If someone gets married in a church they are performing both a civil AND a religious ceremony at the same time. This is a stupid argument because the 'word' is just a word. churches don't have to marry gay people in their church. so beyond regulating religious beliefs, anyone should be able to go to the justice of the peace or town hall or whatever government office and get a civil marriage. problem solved. if the republicans are really that worried about 'marriage' then they should stop getting divorced and cheating on their damned spouses.

i get exhausted being a second class citizen......i don't "feel" like a second class citizen....i am a second class citizen.....i pay taxes through the nose to be a second class citizen....i "feel" like i have the word "sucker" tattooed on my forehead....just once it would be nice if we could have a conversation about marriage that doesn't revolve around religion and morals...its about trampling my pursuit of happiness.....i know the difference between right and wrong....the majority keeps placing this huge chip on my shoulder.....i don't want it there.....

I know that some people on DU like him, but I really don't care for Perez Hilton and having him speak on the issue of Gay Rights and/or marriage just kind of leaves me nonplussed.

but it also bodes well for the issue at least - that this, as a wedge issue for the Republicans, will cease to be a functional weapon in a matter of years. The Meghan/John McCain generation gap splits wide open.

I would prefer young GLBT to see young role models, not shrill gossip queens like Perez. He was OK on LK but his rant about the beauty pagent contestant gave some "straights" (and many on the right) the impression all gays agree with him.
I guess I am old because just once in my life I want to see a float in a Pride Parade with doctors, lawyers and engineers on it - not muscle-bound, leather clad, sweaty, gorgeous young men :woohoo:

Just look at the two men, side by side in split screen.
Their hair color even says it all.

These arguments! Right outta the gate:
The definition of marriage has never changed. Blew that one out of the water.
I love the "That wasn't a value held by any religion," he says of interracial marriage taboos. "That was racism". Oh yeah? Try getting a Catholic to marry a Jew with no problems involved. Religions forbid you to marry outside the faith all the time! That's bigotry pure and simple....just not color based.
And we're right back to where we started (apologies to Anna Russell)
Religions are discriminating, pure and simple, against those "not of their faith". It's simply ILLEGAL.
