What do you call a regime that limits its citizens with funds when traveling abroad. Did you know that Venezuelans can only carry up to $2,500.00 when they travel? That is the limit and the "permission" has to be obtained from the government.

What do you call it when you cannot get a passport because the Government has determined limits. Not only that but how would you feel when you finally get the permission to get your passport and you live in Massachusetts but have to go to New York to get it because that is the "location" the government has "assigned" for you?

What do you call when the opposition has to leave the country because out of the blue the government has decided to accuse of wrongdoing but denies to present any proof?

What do you call when people disappear to never be heard of, knowing that those who disappeared were not fans of the government?

If you complained about the Diebold machines here then you need to read about the ones used in Venezuela that although these did have paper receipts, the ones that left with the machines were never to be found and thus no way to validate...

If you complain about no accountability in the US you should see what really happens there and find there is no comparison.

The fact that it appears that someone won the presidency in a democratic election, and yes he did win fair the first time, doesn't have to make it so. Didn't Bush win fair as well???

If you look at our history, you will find that we even helped bring a few dictators to power. What we think about Chavez is not the question, it's how we deal with him so as to secure ourselves and improve the lot of the Venezuelan people and the region.

The Vietnamese treated dissenters shamefully, despicably, horribly. Stalin and Hitler vied to be the worst of the worst. Democracy began to make progress in the USSR as trade between middle and Eastern Europe eased.

Obama is doing the right thing. His smile does not mean agreement with or approval of everything or even anything Chavez says or does.

Sorry, no sale. Is Chavez Mr. Perfect? No. But given the relative measurement of recent Central/Southern American dictatorships/death squads/corporate states and all around repressive regimes, he's not in that class. Sure, Big Oil and the moneied interests hate Chavez...even tried to overthrown him, but he sure seems to have had a majority of Venezuelans behind him.

Republicans are intent on demonizing Chavez because his brand of popularism is a threat to their preference for RW governments that allow corporate interests to exploit resources/people while we turn a blind eye to human rights. It's far better for Obama to engage and move Chavez to a more mature and progressive path rather than continuing the same failed policies that have hurt our influence in the region due to 50 years of Republican foreign policy.
